The Chinese manufacturer has secured the largest ever single order for electric buses in Europe. The 295 BYD eBuses have been  commissioned by Keolis Nederland BV, the Dutch branch of the global public transport provider Keolis. This will be the largest zero-emission bus fleet in Europe starting from December 2020.

Most of the vehicles are in the 12-meter length with pantograph (206 units), there are also the 8.7-meter midi buses and the new 13-meter models with new upgraded battery technology to provide extended range and ‘city-to-city’ capability. The vehicles will enter service from the end of 2020 on routes throughout the Netherlands’ IJssel-Vecht region, including front-line operations in the municipalities of Zwolle, Apeldoorn and Lelystad.

In 2016, the Dutch Minister of Traffic and Infrastructure signed a pact that aims to reduce emissions by 2025, such as CO2, NOx and PM. “Keolis has overcome this objective by operating almost without emissions since the beginning of the concession”, states the Dutch company.

“It is another milestone for Keolis Nederland and the Keolis Group in developing and deploying electromobility solutions around the world and it reaffirms our commitment to supporting public transport authorities in the transition to sustainability”, said Frank Janssen, CEO of Keolis Nederland. «We chose BYD for our excellent experience with their e-buses. They are a fundamental part of our daily activity. Furthermore, we rely on the expertise of BYD for the development and maintenance of battery packs “.

Headquartered in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, BYD has expanded its European operations by acquiring strategically important orders for the company. In 2012, it won the first European order for the supply of six eBuses to the Dutch island of Schiermonnikoog (the first public tender for ebuses in Europe). Immediately afterwards, high-profile agreements followed, including 35 eBus for Schipol airport, the first airport in the world to adopt electric mobility for passenger handling.

The record order of 295 electric BYD eBuses follows that of last month awarded by the Colombian transport operator TransMilenio SA headquartered in Bogotà for 379 eBuses scheduled for service in September 2020.
