The work of Caetano began in 1946 with the 'Martins Caetano & Irmão Lda', a company which manufactured chassis for buses. Twenty years later, in 1968, It became the sole distributor of Toyota brand in Portugal. The production continued to grow and in 1971 was opened the plant of Fabril de Ovar that guaranteed a production capacity of 50 units per day. The following year, became operational a Toyota dealer network for the Portuguese market. In 1981 was founded the Fogeca Sgps, the holding of Caetano family, which today is the Salvador Caetano Group Sgps. In the following years another prestigious brand enters Caetano group, this was BMW. Its vehicles were so imported and distributed in Portugal by the manufacturer of Vila Nova de Gaia.
In the late Nineties Salvador Caetano Group, through subholding Fogeca Multiauto (now Salvador Caetano Auto Sgps) created a center for used vehicles, fleet management and rapid maintenance services. The multi-product policy was strengthened and in 2002 the Portuguese company entered into a joint venture with DaimlerChrysler to produce buses for the European market. The German participation in the capital of the company ended in January 2010, and Salvador Caetano Group acquired all the shares formerly held by Daimler (26%). In 2007 Caetano Autobody was born for the commercialization of buses and minibuses branded CaetanoBus. The range consists of urban vehicles, intercity and coaches for tourism in small, medium and large dimensions.
