Otokar is one of the leading members of the automotive sector in Turkey. The production is different because it embraces more market segments: freight with trailers, passengers transport with buses and coaches and the Defense military means and armored vehicles. The company debuted at Istanbul in 1963. The first vehicles are intercity built under Magirus Deutz license. Then came the minibus, always with Deutz engine. In 1970 Otokar passed into the hands of the Turkish largest group, the Koc Holding, which acquired the majority share of Otokar. After coaches and minibuses, in 1980 citybuses too became part of the range. The production was extended to military compartement in 1985 with the first armored vehicle. Otokar continued on this road, also on the needs of Turkish Armed Forces, and two yaers later the company signed a contract with the British Land Rover for the production of Land Rover Defenders in Turkey. In 2002, following the acquisition of Istanbul Fruehauf A.S., trailers and semitrailers were introduced in the activity of Otokar. Also in that year was inaugurated the Navigo series for passengers transport and in 2007 the Vectio model. Last born in 2009, is the 12 meter Kent 12-meter and Centro minibuses. The Otokar production plant is at Sakarya and occupies an area of 552 thousand square meters. Employees amountes to 1,200. The sales network extends beyond national borders and is present in several countries European Union.
