The core business of Sunsundegui are buses which represent 80 percent of production. The other 20 percent regards the rail industry with the construction and maintenance of trains. The history of the Iberic manufacturer began in the railway sector. Founded in 1944 by Jose Sunsundegui at Irun (Basque Country), the company started its activity with the repair of railway equipment. In 1955 the company moved to Alsasua (the existing headquarter), a town in Navarre and important railway junction of the last century. Here Sunsudegui worked mainly on the Renfe trains, the Spanish railway company. But when the Renfe opened its own workshop, began difficult times for Sunsundegui. In the late Eighties, at the top of the crisis, a new management team took care of the business management and diversified the production with the repair and body of buses. In the Nineties the company grew again thanks to the export of vehicles in countries like UK and Israel. Strategic was the agreement with Volvo to produce buses on the chassis of Swedish manufacturer. To the relaunch of the company also contributed the agreement with the Feve railway company that, since 2000, involved Sunsundegui in the modernization of its equipment commissioning new railway locomotives and wagons. At the same time the company also built trains for Ferrocarrils in Valencia.
Returning to the bus sector, Sunsundegui reached a record in 2007 with 550 units produced. In late 2008, the company signed a contract with the public transport operator in Dubai for the supply of 55 buses. The Sunsundegui bus production covers the urban, intercity and tourism sector. The 30 percent of the production is exported, mainly to Europe but also to Africa and Asia.
In recent years, the Basque manufacturer went through difficult times and in 2009 the Government of Navarre took control of the company through the Sociedad de desarrollo of Navarra (Sodena).
