Solaris Bus & Coach has announced the largest order for zero-emission buses. It comes from the Polish capital where the city transport operator Miejskie Zakłady Autobusowe w Warszawie (MZA) has commissioned 130 articulated Urbino 18 electric buses. Deliveries are scheduled in 2020. 

The 130 articulated electric buses will be fitted with Solaris High Power batteries with a capacity of 150 kWh. They will be charged both through depot charging stations of the plug-in type and by means of pantographs. The setup of the infrastructure is the object of a separate call for tender.

The drive unit will consist of an axle with two electric engines of 110 kW each. “The vehicles for operator MZA”, points out the manufacturer, “are getting also a voltage converter for the traction motor, produced in SiC technology, which will help to additionally reduce energy consumption. “

The interior will be fitted with air conditioning, three double USB charging ports for passengers, a comprehensive passenger information system and the driver’s cabin completely shut off.

Jan Kuźmiński, CEO of Miejskie Zakłady Autobusowe Sp. z o.o., said: “Our project to purchase 130 electric articulated buses, supported by European funds, is one of the largest e-mobility investments in Europe. We are glad that we are one of the leaders in the implementation of environmentally friendly solutions for transport, according to our plans, in two years’ time, we will have a fleet of nearly 400 zero and low-emission buses.”

So far Solaris has delivered over 1,000 city buses to Warsaw, including 20 electric ones. The electric buses produced by Solaris have been ordered so far by 60 cities in 17 countries, and have already travelled over 14 million kilometres since 2011.
